Tied with Kyoto at number 20, Perth joined Australian cities Melbourne (18) and Sydney (5) on the list.
Monocle credited Perth’s appeal to the laidback lifestyle, work-life balance and outdoor activities, but the highest praise was reserved for the development of the CBD over the past decade.
Monocle said “Perth’s urban centre and the abundant natural beauty of the Swan river come together at Elizabeth Quay, a newly complete central waterfront neighbourhood with office towers, luxury hotels and riverside dining, retail and recreation.”
“The Perth City Link project has provided a point of reconnection too: the sinking of a railway line here has physically linked the central business district with Northbridge, a neighbourhood that’s home to several popular cultural institutions.
“These developments have made Perth a more attractive place to live, with residents enjoying the infrastructural benefits associated with global cities alongside the outdoor pursuits that have always made it special.”
Deputy Lord Mayor David Goncalves said the recognition was testament to the ongoing investment, collaboration and vision shaping Perth into one of the world's great cities.
"West Australians have always known how good life is here. Born and raised in Perth, I've never doubted our city is special, so seeing it named one of the world's most liveable cities is thrilling,” he said.
“What the world is now noticing, locals have watched take shape street by street: vibrant neighbourhoods, welcoming public spaces, a thriving events calendar and a new university campus at our heart.
“A city is made liveable by its people. This recognition belongs to everyone who has helped make Perth what it is today - and to the exciting future we're building together.”
Perth offers an exceptional quality of life for residents, businesses, students and visitors alike. This international recognition is a testament to the ongoing investment, collaboration and vision shaping Perth into one of the world's great cities.
This ranking is a recognition of the City of Perth’s long-term vision and planning, brought to life with the recently Council endorsed Shaping Perth City Centre: Towards 2036 and Beyond study with Gehl and the Capital City Plan. The City has worked with Gehl for more than 30 years, first in 1994, then 2009, with the latest study guiding our next period of growth, as we continue to build and inform our city’s future. Our Capital City Plan is the roadmap to what our city will become, setting our long-term vision as we plan for the City’s targeted population growth to exceed 90,000 by 2050.
Vancouver, Seoul, Zurich and Copenhagen were among the international locations that made Monocle’s top 20, with Tokyo earning the top spot.
