Greener Streets Projects
In 2023, Council endorsed the City’s Urban Greening Strategy, including the key move “Creating a Greener Street Network”.
The recent Shaping Perth City Centre – Towards 2036 and Beyond framework by global urban design firm Gehl builds on this vision, promoting the transformation of our streets into blue green corridors that capture stormwater, reduce heat and introduce more diverse landscaping across the city.
Laneway greening
Laneways are an important part of our city’s character, with the potential to become much loved spaces full of quirky charm. Through the ‘Forgotten Spaces’ program, the City is activating these hidden pockets with public art, lighting, seating and new uses that bring them to life.
Our Urban Greening Strategy highlights how laneways can support a cooler, greener and more resilient city. Across Australia, greening laneways has delivered real benefits—reducing urban heat, supporting biodiversity, improving walkability, boosting local business activity and strengthening social connection. With thoughtful design, even small spaces can become leafy, inviting places to wander or pause, despite challenges like limited space and service access.
Wolf Lane: a greener, cooler, more vibrant space
The City’s recent refresh of Wolf Lane shows what’s possible when creativity and greening come together.
Larger irrigated garden beds, new planters, vertical greenery and street trees now line the laneway, adding colour, shade and vibrancy. Indian Mast trees (Polyalthia longifolia)—chosen for their slim, upright form—are being carefully monitored to see how well they perform in tight urban spaces and whether they could be used in similar locations across the city.
Combined with new lighting, public art and seating, the greening of Wolf Lane has created a cooler, more welcoming place for people to enjoy.
Come take a look
Next time you’re in the city, wander down to Wolf Lane and experience the transformation for yourself. It’s a great example of how urban greening in small spaces can make a big difference to the way we use and enjoy our city.
