For the second year in a row, the City of Perth has been internationally recognised as a Tree City of the World for its exceptional efforts in expanding and nurturing its urban forest in 2024.
The Tree Cities of the World program recognises cities with urban forests that are well-protected, sustainably managed, and celebrated for the wide range of benefits they provide to residents.
Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds expressed pride in the award, highlighting that it acknowledges the City's commitment to growing and maintaining a sustainable urban tree canopy in local parks and City streets.
"Trees are vital to the City, they provide essential habitats for wildlife, help cool the environment, improve our well-being, and contribute to making Perth a more liveable, sustainable place,” said Cr Reynolds.
“The recognition isn’t just about the number of trees we plant but for ensuring their long-term health and growth.
"We’re investing in the right tree species suited to our climate and the creation of secure planting environments with improved soil volumes and stormwater harvesting, ensuring they thrive and will be enjoyed for generations to come."
In recent years, the City has increased its efforts to celebrate and promote its urban forest, with community events like the upcoming WA Tree Festival in April and Tree Month in May.
Last year, Tree Month saw over 280 trees and nearly 1,600 shrubs planted as part of verge transformations. This year’s initiative will be even bigger - with a range of tree plantings for the community to get involved in across the month of May.
The City’s National Tree Day event in July also saw more than 200 volunteers planting 3,500 native plants in just one day.
The City of Perth’s Urban Forest Plan (2016-2036) is a comprehensive strategic action plan aimed at protecting and enhancing the tree canopy. Since its launch, more than 7,000 trees have been planted across the City.
Run by the Arbour Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, the Tree Cities of the World Program is a global effort recognising cities committed to their urban forests.
To be recognised as a Tree City, the City of Perth had to:
- demonstrate its policies, procedures and laws for tree planting, care and protection
- regular monitoring and assessment of the tree population
- show it had dedicated project budgets and funding
- nominated staff with responsibility for trees
- celebrate achievements.
