The City of Perth warmly welcomed Mayor Takao Shimozuru and his delegates from Kagoshima, Japan this week, marking the 50-year milestone of our Sister City relationship which dates back to 1974. Originating from the cities' shared latitude of 32 degrees, this unique connection has flourished over the decades, fostering numerous exchanges and collaborations.
Mayor Takao Shimozuru and his delegates were greeted with a Whadjuk Nyoongar Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, and a commemorative reception at Council House where cultural exchanges continued. During their three-day visit, they also explored iconic Perth landmarks such as Optus Stadium and Elizabeth Quay, engaged in business meetings with local organisations, and participated in various functions coordinated in their honour.
Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the Perth-Kagoshima relationship has played a pivotal role in actively promoting links through educational exchanges and partnerships including the Young Wings program and Kagoshima University Graduate School of Science and Engineering. Cultural exchanges, including the City’s sponsorship of the Perth Japan Festival, have further deepened the cultural understanding between our cities and communities.
“50 years is our longest standing Sister City relationship and it’s been wonderful to be able to honour the enduring nature of that relationship this week.
“What’s particularly significant for Perth is that this partnership has evolved beyond friendship into vital business connections. This relationship is more than just ceremonial, it has a tangible benefit to the WA economy.”
Kagoshima Park, located within Burswood Park and named in tribute to our Sister City relationship, stands as a testament to the enduring friendship and historical connections between Perth and Kagoshima. Both cities joined together to plant five Sakura seedlings in the park, representing the lasting connections strengthened by cultural understanding and commercial ties.
“No other place would be more appropriate than Kagoshima Park to commemorate this milestone. As the trees grow and become stronger, so does the trusting friendship between our cities,” Mr Zempilas said.
The City was delighted to celebrate this significant milestone with Kagoshima, reaffirming our commitment to fostering meaningful exchanges that benefit both our cities in the years ahead.
