Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the Year of the Snake started today with the first new moon of the year, and people were expected to flock to the City to celebrate.

“We’re ringing in the Lunar New Year in the City from today with an exciting line up of cultural events which offer something for everyone to enjoy,” Mr Zempilas said.

Celebrations kicked off at the Bell Tower, which also marked its 25th anniversary today, with kung fu and martial arts displays, calligraphy workshops and live music.

Elizabeth Quay comes to life from 6pm with lion and dragon dancers, who will perform each night. On Saturday, 1 February the precinct will host a Lunar New Year market with over 60 stalls offering everything from unique finds to delicious street food.

The Perth Chinese New Year Fair, presented by Chung Wah Association, is back at Northbridge Piazza on Sunday, 2 February offering a range of cultural experiences. James Street will be closed to traffic and transformed into a lively marketplace, showcasing Asian cultures.

Mr Zempilas said thanked the Chung Wah Association, Development WA and the Bell Tower for hosting this year’s celebrations.

“The City of Perth is home to many people who celebrate Lunar New Year so it is fitting that we are the centre of celebrations. Along with the wider community, we are privileged to experience the rich culture and traditions that the Lunar New Year brings.

“On behalf of the City of Perth, I wish you all a happy and prosperous Year of the Snake.”

Lunar New Year celebrations will continue throughout the month at other city-based venues, including the Perth Mint, London Court and Raine Square.

Don’t miss the daily Lion Dancer performances taking place at Murray Street Mall from midday every weekday from 29 January to 12 February. Red lanterns will also adorn city malls and the streets of Northbridge throughout the month.
