Newspaper House, part of the St Georges Terrace Commercial Group, is both City recognised and State registered for its cultural and heritage significance. Built in 1933, the building was designed by Lt Gen Sir Talbot Hobbs, who travelled to London and the Eastern States to study comparable buildings before commencing its intricate design.

In February 2024, the City of Perth approved funding through the Heritage Conservation Grant program to support repair and restoration works to the Newspaper House Clock.

The matched funding grant, awarded to Brookfield Nominees, enabled the careful removal and transport of the 92 year old clock to Timepiece Creations for specialist restoration. Principal horologist Nino Sardi, President of the Master Clock and Watch Makers of WA, oversaw the works. According to Heritage Architect Alana Jennings, simply accessing the clock was one of the most challenging aspects of the project.

Now fully restored and illuminated, the double-sided clock once again projects proudly over the footpath. Striking by day and particularly captivating at night, it reconnects locals and visitors to the building’s original role as a hub for reporters and the latest news.

Heritage Consultant Alana Jennings of Element Advisory acknowledged that the City’s Heritage Conservation Grant was crucial to the project’s success, enabling an exemplary outcome: the return of a fully functioning and historically significant timepiece.
