Barn Dance Perth case study
Barn Dance has become a much-loved fixture on Perth’s LGBTIQA+ events calendar, bringing together the LGBTQIA+ community and allies for a vibrant celebration of connection, inclusion and community spirit.
First launched in Perth in 2019, the event was an immediate success and has continued to grow in popularity ever since.
Barn Dance has been supported through the City’s Local Activation Grant program since 2020. The funding has enabled the Barn Dance team to expand the experience by introducing additional free event components ahead of the main event.
The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with attendees embracing the unique concept and welcoming atmosphere. In 2024, 96 per cent of attendees said they would recommend the event to friends and colleagues.
Barn Dance attracts people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds, helping foster a strong sense of belonging and celebration within Perth’s diverse community.
The City of Perth’s Local Activation Grant Program provides funding up to $20,000 to support events, arts and cultural initiatives, and other community activations that deliver a public outcome.
Manuao Teaotonga, from the team behind Barn Dance, encouraged others to consider applying for the program.
“If you’re looking to apply for the Local Activation Grants, go for it,” he said.
“Don’t be afraid of going through the process because that kind of funding is so beneficial. It would also benefit other community groups that need support to bring their event together or take it to the next level.”
The 2026/27 Local Activation Grant Program is open until 30 March 2027, or until funding is exhausted.
