The City of Perth’s Heritage Conservation Grants support the restoration of publicly accessible commercial and private residential heritage-protected places. A great example of this is the beautiful Federation bungalow at 22 Palmerston St, Northbridge.

Identified in the City’s Local Heritage Survey -  2023, the residence was in good overall condition, but its original stone front boundary wall was leaning, the tuck pointing had deteriorated, and the left-

hand chimney cornices had become dilapidated.

Designed by renowned architect and WWI General Sir Joseph Talbot Hobbs and likely built by John Hurst, this 130-year-old cottage has now been carefully restored with the help of a Heritage Conservation Grant. Restoration works included:

  • Straightening and repointing the stone boundary wall
  • Replacing the chimney mouldings to match the original design

These improvements not only enhance the residence’s streetscape but also preserve its heritage for future generations. Property owner Christopher Sellings shared his appreciation: “The team at City of Perth heritage were great.”
