Australia Day in the City will be an opportunity to come together as a community, enjoy a beautiful summer day in the City, and celebrate what it means to be Australian.
Fireworks and drones will light up Perth’s skyline providing a modern twist on the City’s annual Australia Day tradition. Presented by Hancock Prospecting and major supporter Lotterywest, the latest of six City of Light Shows is set to close out January 26 with a bang.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said Australia Day was a time for us all to come together to reflect, respect and celebrate the unique and diverse country we call home.
“Australia Day in the City will be an opportunity to come together as a community, enjoy a beautiful summer day in the City, and celebrate what it means to be Australian.”
“We encourage everyone to make their way into the City to enjoy a range of cultural experiences, music, entertainment, rides and international cuisine. Bring your friends and family, set up for the day and watch the sky light up as we live up to our name as the City of Light,” Mr Zempilas said.
Between 3pm and 7:30pm, the Birak Concert at Supreme Court Gardens will celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The stage will host a variety of home-grown entertainment including headline acts Red Ochre Band, Pipeline and Phil Walleystack.
Also from 3pm, the Langley Park and Terrace Road carpark grassed area will host a vibrant entertainment zone, with fun for all ages and adrenaline levels. Visitors will be treated to a huge range of free activities, ticketed amusements and games and a selection of food options.
“From 8.15pm, crowds will be wowed by an impressive 30-minute light show above the Swan River featuring both drones, fireworks and music from one of our sponsors Mix94.5.
“Different to previous Skyworks events, this new City of Light Show is designed to be experienced from the Langley Park entertainment zone. In order to enjoy the full experience families are encouraged to come into the City early and enjoy everything it has to offer,” Mr Zempilas said.
Also sponsored by Channel 7 and assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Day Council, crowds are advised that the Mix94.5 soundtrack will only be heard from Langley Park, and partygoers elsewhere will be unable to tune in.
Families are encouraged to take note of road closures and plan their journey to and from the event. For those driving into the city, a road closure map and list of carparks are available on Visit Perth.
