The City of Perth was thrilled to partner with GO2CUP for the first time at our recent Sunset Sounds event, introducing reusables and waste-sorting initiatives to enhance our sustainability efforts.
With many of our events taking place along the stunning Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), it’s crucial to prioritise waste reduction. Single-use packaging can be easily carried by the wind into the river and surrounding waterways, threatening local ecosystems. By incorporating reusable alternatives, we’re taking proactive steps to protect our natural environment.
Sunset Sounds saw around 500 community members and visitors gather by the river foreshore to enjoy an afternoon of live music and cultural food delights. Two of our participating food vendors embraced the shift towards sustainability:
- That Little Gelato Cart served their delicious treats in reusable ice cream dishes, eliminating waste from their servings.
- Rio400 significantly reduced their environmental footprint by replacing 50% of their disposable serveware with reusable alternatives.
Thanks to these efforts and the support of our community, less than 10 litres of landfill waste was generated from the entire event – an outstanding achievement in minimising our environmental impact!
This initiative was made possible thanks to funding support from the Plastic Free Riverpark program, run by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. It aligns seamlessly with the City’s ongoing commitment to reducing waste and promoting environmentally responsible practices.
The initiative will be back in action again at the upcoming West Perth Movie Night on Friday 28 February.
By continuing to integrate sustainable practices into our events, we can work together to create a cleaner, greener future for our City of Light.
