Register a cat
|What you need||As a resident of the City of Perth, you're welcome to own a cat as a pet, however all cats must be registered with the Council. Here you'll find all the forms you need to register your cat for the first time, to renew your registration, to transfer your cat from another council, and to pay fees and fines.|
|Eligibility requirements||All domestic cats in Western Australia, over six months of age, will need to be sterilised, microchipped and registered with their local government.|
|Duration||One year, three years, and lifetime options||Fees||See fee table below|
Do I need to register my cat?
Yes, if your cat is over six months old. All pet cats in WA need to be sterilised, microchipped and registered with their local council by the time they reach six months. There is a fine if you do not register your cat – see Cat Act (2011).
How to register your cat
You can register your cat online, by post or in person. Registering is a two-step process. Firstly, you apply for a one-year, three-year or lifetime registration. Once this has been approved by the City of Perth, we will send you an invoice with a Payment ID for you to pay your registration fee. Fees can then be paid online, or in person at Council House.
If you would prefer to submit a physical copy of your application, please send the complete form and a cheque or money order made payable to the City of Perth to:
City of Perth Council House, 27 St George’s Terrace, Perth GPO Box C120 Perth Western Australia. 6839
Complete the PDF form, print it out and bring it in to our customer service desk.
Registration periods are fixed each year starting on 1 November and ending on 31 October. This means that all one-year or three-year registrations expire on 31 October each year. You can register your cat at any time, however note that a one-year registration will not provide you the full year’s cover but will expire 31 October. To account for this shorter period your fees will be halved to $10 (inc. GST) if you register after 31 May.
You can register your cat for one year, three years, or for life. The fees for each are set by the WA State Government. If you have a WA Seniors Card or Pensioner Concession Card you are eligible for discounted rates. One year registrations made after 31 May will only have to pay half the standard fee.
Paying your registration fees
Once your application has been approved, and you’ve received an invoice with your Payment ID you can pay your fee online using the Payments Form or visit us in person at Council House.
How to change your registration details
If your circumstances change, you can call us on 9461 3333, contact Customer Service Online, or email us at email@example.com
What happens if I’ve moved Councils?
If you’ve just moved to the City of Perth you will need to register your cat’s details again with us. However, you do not have to pay any additional fees. We’ll honour the term of your existing registration period.
Your cat should be microchipped before you register your cat. You can get you cat microchipped at your vet, or at the Cat Haven. If you cannot microchip your cat, you will need to submit a letter of exemption from your vet. For more information on microchipping please visit the Cat Haven website.
