Elections

City of Perth voters have the unique opportunity to decide the capital city Council on behalf of all Western Australians. It is a privilege that is afforded to less than one per cent of the State’s population.

Local Government elections are held every two years on the third Saturday in October.

Important information for voters

If you are an elector or a body corporate who has nominees on the City of Perth Owners and Occupiers Electoral roll and your eligibility to vote in the 2020, 2021 and 2023 local government elections is based on your occupation of a rateable property under a lease, rent agreement or other legal agreement, your eligibility to be on the City of Perth Owners and Occupiers electoral roll may expire on 21 April 2024.

The next Ordinary Local Government Election will be held on 18 October 2025.

The City has endeavoured to contact affected occupier electors and body corporates, however we may not have reached everyone.

To check if your eligibility to be on the Owners and Occupiers roll is expiring, please contact us at election@cityofperth.wa.gov.au 

Recent amendments to the Local Government Act introduced new requirements for occupiers of rateable property.  Some of these amendments include that an applicant must demonstrate:

  • that the applicant has continuously occupied property in the Local Government for at least 12 months prior to the application
  • that they have quiet enjoyment (exclusive occupation) of their occupied property
  • they are able to secure their occupied property from intruders
  • they genuinely operate or intend to operate their business from that property
  • they lease at least 10m2 of property, subject to a series of exclusions
  • they pay a prescribed minimum amount of rent for the property.

Also please note the expiry of occupier electors from the roll is now either on the date the lease expires or 6 months after 2 ordinary elections have occurred since enrolment.
