Haiku on Hay Competition
Now in its third year, the City of Perth Library’s Haiku Poetry Competition continues to inspire creativity, with over 200 entries received!
In partnership with WA Poets Inc, the competition was open to WA residents across four categories: Adults, Young Adults, Primary School and Secondary School.
Entrants were invited to write either a traditional or modern haiku, with entries judged on how they made the reader feel, their ability to use brevity to capture a moment in time, and the emotion they evoked.
The winning and commended entries will be on display in the Library’s Ground Floor cabinets until the end of September.

Full Terms and Conditions
The Haiku on Hay Poetry Competition is coordinated by the City of Perth Library, and proudly supported by WA Poets Inc.
- Entries open on Wednesday 1 July 2026 and close on Friday 31 July 2026.
- A maximum of one poem per poet can be submitted for judging.
- Open to Western Australian residents only. Only WA residents will be eligible for a prize.
- All entries must be submitted via the Microsoft Forms Link: https://forms.office.com/r/8m7JtKhwXZ
- This competition is for haiku of three lines only and a maximum of 17 syllables. You can choose to write a traditional or a modern haiku for this competition. You’ll be judged on how your poem feels, how well it uses brevity to capture a moment in time, and how well it evokes emotion.
- Entries must be previously unpublished (this includes social media platforms) and must not infringe on existing copyright.
- All entries will be judged anonymously. The judging panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- Entrants are required to give their name and contact details for winner/finalist announcement.
- All prize winners and finalists agree to have their entries (with their preferred acknowledgment) featured on the City of Perth’s and WA Poets’ promotional channels.
- Winners’ and finalists’ work may also be displayed at the City of Perth Library during September for all to enjoy.
- The value of prize packs are listed in the categories.
- Finalists in all categories will receive certificates.
- Winners will be announced on Wednesday 26 August 2026 and contacted by email or phone.
- Prizes are to be collected in person from the City of Perth Library, 573 Hay Street, Perth WA 6000. Postage of prize packs outside Perth Metro Area may be at the winner’s expense.
- City of Perth staff, contractors and sub-contractors are not eligible to enter.
- WA Poets Inc. Committee members are not eligible to enter.
