Council House marked its 60th anniversary in 2023, having been officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 25 March 1963.

To ensure this iconic building continues to serve the community for generations to come, essential remediation works are required to address water ingress and structural issues identified in parts of the Lower Ground Floor.

As part of the City’s 2025/26 and 2026/27 capital works program, works will include strengthening the Forecourt slab and refreshing the surrounding landscaping. Fire compliance and waterproofing upgrades will also be undertaken in the Council House Staff (Managers’) Carpark.

During the project, the front grass Forecourt will be closed and fenced for approximately 12 months. The Ground Floor Concierge will temporarily relocate to the Lower Ground Floor and will be accessible via the south staff entrance. While the Council House Managers’ Carpark will be closed, the Council House Public Carpark will remain open and accessible.

What’s next?

From 9 February, the entire Ground Floor of Council House, along with the front forecourt, will be closed. As a result, the Concierge will temporarily relocate to the Lower Ground Floor for the duration of the works.

During this time, all building access will be via the Lower Ground south entrance only.
