This month it’s Plastic Free July – which encourages all of us to reduce our use of plastics to support a cleaner and beautiful City of Perth. As WA continues its state-wide ban on the supply of certain single-use plastic items, here are a few easy ways you can cut down on plastic.
Ditch the plastic bag
Be prepared! Keep a few reusable bags in your car, at work and in your handbag (there are even purse-sized bags for emergencies!) Or, if you’re planning a bigger shop – why not take a few cardboard boxes? You’ll be surprised how much you’ll be able to fit, and as a bonus, you’ll get a great arm workout!
Say goodbye to the plastic drink bottle and get creative
Avoiding single-use plastic water bottles is easy—by remembering and carrying your own reusable alternative. Many people find it helps to keep it handy in their work bag, gym bag, or car, so it’s always accessible. Consider repurposing an existing bottle such as a passata jar or opting for stainless steel or glass bottles for a healthier choice.
If you ever forget to bring your water bottle, don’t panic. You can find a fountain around our beautiful city or purchase a glass bottle of water and reuse it. Last year, Plastic Free July participants from around the world together avoided 240 million kgs of plastic!
Keep your coffee green
As more people realise single-use cups aren’t readily recycled, it’s getting easier to avoid them. Up your cup game too – either bring your own reusable cup, borrow or swap a cup from some cafés, or take ten minutes and enjoy your favourite cuppa there.
Help make a difference to avoid the billions of single-use cups that end up in landfill and litter each year, by simply:
Fortunately, there are lots of fantastic alternatives to using plastic cling wrap in the kitchen to help reduce plastic waste. Let’s explore some practical ideas:
Using reusable containers: use containers you already have or choose glass or stainless-steel containers. These are durable, washable, and perfect for storing leftovers, fruits, vegetables, and other food items.
- Upside down plates: place an upside-down plate on a bowl to act as a lid. Simple and effective.
- Cloth Covers: dampen a cloth (such as a cotton tea towel) and cover bread, cheese, or fresh produce. It helps keep food fresh without plastic.
- Silicone bowl toppers: these flexible washable covers fit over bowls, pots, and pans and can be reused many times.
- Wax wraps: made from cotton infused with wax, these wraps mould to food items. Useful for sandwiches or covering half-cut fruits.
Together, these small changes add up to a greener planet.
Bulk up
Grocery shopping can get tricky when you’re trying to cut back on plastic, as everything from veggies to bread can be wrapped in plastic. You can easily limit plastic packaging by visiting your local bulk food store, such as Kakulas Brothers. They offer paper packaging, or you can bring your jars to fill up with dry goods.
Farmer’s markets are also a great way to get fresh produce without the plastic. Have you checked out Perth City Farm’s Saturday morning markets yet?
