The City of Perth is encouraging everyone to be aware of swooping magpies during this time, as many may display protective behaviours to guard their young.
Magpies are a protected native species under the Wildlife Conservation Act, and it is illegal to harm them or remove nests without a permit.
Here are some tips to help reduce the impact of a swooping magpie while enjoying the great outdoors:
• Wear sunglasses and wide-brim hats
• Do not provoke magpies as they swoop to protect their young
• If riding a bike, dismount through nesting magpie territory
• If swooped, stay calm and walk away. Try to avoid running or looking toward the swooping bird
Further information is available through the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
To report a swooping incident within the City of Perth, please phone 9461 3333.
