The people of Perth will be the first to see the new Ella-Mobbs Cup this Friday 1 July from 11.30am – 1pm ahead of Saturday’s much-anticipated international rugby union match between the Wallabies and England at Optus Stadium.
For the first time in 12 years, Perth will host England in the first of three games across Australia – reigniting one the oldest sporting rivalries.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas is encouraging Rugby fans to come down to Forrest Place to join in the fun with RugbyWA activities, entertainment, giveaways, legends of the game and Wallabies players, plus chances to win a double pass to Saturday’s match.
The captains of both sides will unveil a new trophy for the tournament; the Ella-Mobbs Cup. Named after Wallabies legend Mark Ella and English Rugby Captain and war hero Edgar Mobbs, the Ella-Mobbs Cup represents a new era in a rivalry that dates back to 1909.
Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the City of Perth was proud to kick off the test series and become the first ever battleground for the Ella-Mobbs Cup.
“Following the State of Origin match last weekend, the City is buzzing, and we’re excited to host our first major international sports game since the border reopened in March,” he said.
Last Saturday’s State of Origin fan event saw the biggest crowd in the Murray Street mall for 2022.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas will be joined by Deputy Premier Roger Cook and Wallabies Captain Michael Hooper along with their English counterpart.
“So this Friday, head into the City, wear your team’s colours and soak up the atmosphere!
“After you’ve had your rugby fix, make sure to grab some lunch at one of the many great City cafes and restaurants” he said.
The big game kicks off at 5:55pm Saturday, 2 July at Optus Stadium.
