The City of Perth Council met on Tuesday August 27. The following decisions were made:

Draft Riverfront Masterplan

Council last night unanimously agreed to progress community consultation on a world class Riverfront Masterplan, aimed at unlocking the potential of Langley Park and the Swan River.

Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said this vision would dramatically increase the livability of the area and attract visitors and tourists and enable the city riverfront to become a destination attraction with a lagoon, cafes and restaurants, a public mooring and ferry jetty, a river walk and ecological precinct.

The Riverfront Masterplan features a reimagined river edge and a re-aligned Riverside Drive, converting the river foreshore to a destination attraction, and improving connectivity to the City.

The overall space has been imagined in five distinct precincts – Cultural, Play, Leisure, Event and Ecology.

Further details on the Riverfront Masterplan are available here from P 114 of the Council Agenda.

Major Events and Festivals Sponsorship

More than $1.45 million in sponsorship was approved by Council last night for three major events destined for Perth.

The City of Perth will support the 2027 World Police & Fire Games, Perth Festival and an international electronic music event to be held at Langley Park.

The World Police and Fire Games will likely feature several events at City of Perth venues including Langley Park, Supreme Court Gardens, Forrest Place, Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre and Kings Park.

Perth Festival is the signature festival on the West Australian summer calendar with a 2025 program once again comprising local and international artists across a number of artforms including dance, music, film, visual arts, literature and theatre.

The proposed international electronic music festival has a projected crowd of 22,000 and $5.2 million economic impact for the City, and follows on from the successful Fred Again event at Langley Park earlier this year.

Arts and Culture Sponsorship

Eleven Arts and Culture sponsorships for 2024/25 were approved by Council to receive a total of $685,000 in sponsorships.

The events include sponsorship for the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Blue Room Theatre, WA Symphony Orchestra and WA Ballet Company, among others.

This year’s projects represent a broad range of high-quality arts activity and creative cultural practice which will engage, challenge, surprise and inspire people.
