Hello again,
The festive season has arrived with the bang of fireworks in the City, and I'm pleased to echo the words you'll now see all around, that Christmas lives here, in the City of Perth!
Christmas is a special time where families can come together to enjoy all the delights of the season on streets decked with festive decorations, glowing lights and immersive experiences and events.
It's also the most important time of the year for our traders, with Christmas on average bringing more than $130 million in economic value and more than 900,000 people to our streets. With this Christmas/summer period promising to be the biggest in ten years, I'm confident we'll be boosting that average this Christmas.
As an example, the weekend just gone saw Elizabeth Quay packed to the brim with 20,000 people for the first of the series of free City of Light Shows, proudly sponsored by Lotterywest. Not to mention the sight of packed malls and streets, for the launch of the Rio Tinto Christmas Lights Trail on the Friday evening - I had fun joining Santa in Forrest Place for the now annual Switching On of the Lights ceremony!
It was also great to see some of you at the City of Light Show on Sunday, which also marked the 90th anniversary of Lotterywest - what a remarkable number for this Western Australian institution.
This is just the beginning of Christmas in our City, with festive events and moments scheduled from now through to the 2 January.
Christmas lives here campaign
I'm very pleased to announce that our TV commercial for our Christmas Lives Here campaign has now hit screens across Perth!
The TV commercial is just one part of a comprehensive campaign that also features press, digital and outdoor advertising, so you're sure to see the flags, banners and billboards draped with the call that Christmas Lives Here in the coming weeks. Check out the commercial at the link above.
And for those that missed it...
A picture tells a thousand words. Last weekend, in competition with Coldplay, we truly kicked the festive season off in style, drawing thousands of people to our Christmas decked streets. It's a genuine taster of what's to come.
It's also worth noting the heatwave we have experienced this week, which has coincided with fires around the State. We are monitoring the situation alongside the State Government and will continue to enact measures when and if they are needed. This has included stationing free cold water tanks in the Murray Street Mall during the week - of course for comprehensive advice on how to manage the heat during these events, head to https://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/heat
