An awesome spectacle of fireworks and drones will light up Perth’s skyline and wow crowds on Australia Day, thanks to Hancock Prospecting.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said 26 January was a time for us all to come together to reflect, respect and celebrate the unique and diverse country we call home.
“The Hancock Prospecting City of Light Show will be an opportunity to come together as a community, enjoy a beautiful summer day in the City, and celebrate what it means to be Australian.”
On this special day, the City also welcomes new Australian citizens hailing from countries across the world at the Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremony. The Ceremony also sees the City honour local heroes through the Community Citizen of the Year Awards.
“We encourage everyone to make their way into the City to enjoy a range of cultural experiences, music, entertainment, rides and international cuisine. Bring your friends and family, set up for the day and watch the sky light up as we show our gratitude for the city we know and love,” Mr Zempilas said.
Between 3pm and 7:30pm, the Birak Concert at Supreme Court Gardens will celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The stage will host a variety of home-grown entertainment including headline acts Miss Genius and Billy Narrier and the Band. Birak is the first season of the traditional Noongar calendar, where the warm weather really starts to take hold.
Also from 3pm, Langley Park will host an array of vibrant entertainment, with fun for all ages and adrenaline levels. Visitors will be treated to a huge range of free activities, including water slides in Supreme Court Gardens, and back on Langley Park the Auspire film dome and the Channel 7 activation where you can meet your favourite reporter and capture a photo at the news desk!
“From 8.15pm, crowds will be wowed by an impressive 30-minute light show above the Swan River featuring both drones, fireworks and a specially curated soundtrack of some classic Aussie favourites – and a few new hits.
“A reminder that this City of Light Show, including the soundtrack, is best experienced from Langley Park. In order to enjoy the full experience families are encouraged to come into the City early and enjoy everything it has to offer,” Mr Zempilas said.
Families are encouraged to take note of road closures and plan their journey to and from the event. For those driving into the city, a road closure map and list of carparks are available on the Visit Perth website. Public transport is also free for everyone with a SmartRider. If you haven’t got a SmartRider yet, make sure you plan ahead and get one before the day – details here.
