    • Supervision of children

For their own security and wellbeing, children 11 years and under must be accompanied by a responsible guardian. Children five years and under must be within sight of a responsible guardian at all times.

Parents sometimes leave children in the care of their older siblings (aged 12 or above). We strongly suggest that if this decision is made, all children are registered as Library users so we may access contact details if necessary. Please be aware that parents/guardians remain responsible for the safety of all of their children at all times. Library staff are not equipped to watch or care for children or teenagers in the Library.

    • Adults visiting the Children's Floor

The Children’s Floor is dedicated to children’s services. To ensure the safety and comfort of families we ask that any adults visiting the space are accompanied by a child, however if you wish to see the space and facilities on offer, or to browse or borrow from the collection, you are welcome to do so.

    • Groups visiting the Children's Floor

The Children’s Floor is intended for general use only. Groups who wish to use the space to meet should email at least one week prior to request permission, please contact: [email protected]

Information for schools is available on our School Visits page.

No private events (e.g. birthday parties) can occur on the Children’s Floor. If you are interested in hiring a suitable space for your next event, please contact the Library Events Team on [email protected] or visit the Event Spaces page. Please note there are costs associated with venue hire.

    • Food and drink

Cold food and covered or bottled drinks are permitted (no strong smelling hot food). Please eat at one of the tables available or in the outdoor space.
