Christmas is almost here and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your incredible support of our City this year and remind you we are open for business as usual TODAY and on Boxing Day!
OPEN FOR BUSINESS – BRING YOUR MASK
If you’ve still got presents to buy, the City is the place for you on this Christmas Eve and for the sales on Sunday. Bring your mask and your Christmas spirit. We’re inviting everyone into the City over the next four days – but please do it responsibly, bring your mask and remember to use the Safe WA app to check-in wherever you go.
Last night between 4-6pm the City of Perth staff gathered on the rooftop at the Art Gallery of Western Australia for our annual end of year celebration. I thanked the staff for their incredible dedication to the City this year and was delighted to see how effortlessly everyone slipped on their masks as they left to make their way home.
We can all enjoy Christmas and keep each other safe at the same time.
CHRISTMAS BOOM
You will have heard me talk about the re-emergence of the City and in particular our CBD and Northbridge as a Christmas experience and shopping destination - and I’m delighted to say the numbers back it up.
Our City has been alive this December, a great spirit in the air and feet on the ground.
Remember too, the weekday numbers above don’t include what is typically our busiest week – this week!
Our Christmas Nativity Production, reinstated by this City of Perth Council, was a huge success and played to big crowds on both Saturday and Sunday last weekend.
The Christmas Lights trail has drawn record numbers this week and "Festive Land" at the Perth Cultural Centre has become a new family favorite, my girls loved it.
A CLEANER CITY
We know you want a cleaner City – so do we. The City of Perth Clean Machine has become enormously popular – if you see a mess, call 9461 3333 and the Clean Machine will be dispatched to clean it up. Thank you to all of you who have made a call.
At this week’s December Council Meeting, our team committed even more resources to the City’s cleaning program. Following our successful “deep clean” trial in James Street, Council voted to expand the budget to allow a regular monthly “deep clean” in one of our busiest and highest profile streets.
This is on top of a City of Perth cleaning regime which includes;
- 59 dedicated cleaning staff
- A 20 hour per day, seven days per week operation
- 30,000 bins emptied every week – 1.56 million bins emptied this year
- Seven street sweepers in high rotation keeping roads and footpaths clean
And these services continue during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
MAJOR EVENTS
We want Perth to be recognised as a “big event City” – we demonstrated what we are capable of with our hugely successful AFL Grand Final week celebrations. This week Council voted to increase the City’s Major Events and Sponsorship budget to $3 million in 2022/23.
As WA prepares to open up next year, you’ve heard me say we need to do that with purpose and intent. The City is ready to welcome visitors and events back to Perth. This increase of more than $1.8 million further entrenches our position as the state’s most event-friendly destination for organisers and visitors.
We want the spotlight on Perth.
And speaking of which, I’m looking forward to inviting you to join us at Elizabeth Quay on February 19 next year as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of John Glenn’s Friendship 7 orbit where he proclaimed Perth the “City of Light”.
Our team is excited to announce our FREE family event (more details next month) which will feature the CBD’s first drone show out above the water in front of Elizabeth Quay – and will allow us to come together to celebrate the historic anniversary and officially launch the new era of Perth - City of Light.
Endorsed by our Brand Perth forum in July and worked on by our marketing and creative teams since, the City of Light tag has always had great significance and meaning for Perth and is as relevant today as it was 60 years ago.
I’m excited to launch this re-brand in February.
WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?
We did! Following on from the success of our fenced off dog park at Ozone Reserve, this week Council voted to expand the existing facility AND to install a new fenced off-lead dog park at Railway Reserve in Claisebrook.
This is a direct response to our ratepayers telling us this is what they want. We are a City which puts it people (and their dogs) first.
Thank you to everyone in the community who provided us with feedback and helped us make this decision.
As 2021 comes to an end I want to leave you with this illustration of how your Council and your administration have been working for you. Yes – there is more to be done. In fact that challenge never stops, but it is with great pleasure and pride I present some of the highlights here:
