The existing lighting at Council House is reaching the end of its practicable life due to serviceability, access and equipment availability.
Chair Commissioner Eric Lumsden said technical difficulties of late had caused a range of anomalies in specific colours and images projected onto Council House.
“The City has regularly utilises Council House lighting to acknowledge significant events such as Road Safety week, National Water Week, Pridefest and Lights for Lifeline,” Mr Lumsden said.
“With the existing system now experiencing some limitations in customisation, the kaleidoscope lighting effect is permanently in place until the upgrade is complete.
“Significant advances in lighting have been made in recent years, and by utilising new technology, we will have the opportunity deliver customer expectations more consistently.
“The current Council House Lighting Scheme was installed in 2009, at a time when this type of LED technology was still very new.”
There are approximately 548 lighting fixtures throughout the building and these will be replaced over the next two financial years.
The lighting upgrade is expected to save the City more than $170,000 per year in operational costs.
