A verge collection by the City’s Waste and Cleansing Unit removed almost 100 tonnes of unwanted goods from residents and ratepayers, over two days in March.
Chair of Commissioners Eric Lumsden said 27 tonnes, or 27 per cent, of items removed were able to be recycled.
“The City supports sustainability, and recycling is a simple yet effective step in the right direction,” Commissioner Lumsden said.
“Metal, cardboard, plastic and wood products made up the bulk of the recyclable material, while green waste was also collected and diverted from landfill.
“It is a good result and the City will continue to work with residents and ratepayers in an effort to educate and cut down on recyclable and reusable material going to landfill.”
The City’s next bi-annual verge collection is scheduled for September.
