Azabu Japanese restaurant in James Street Northbridge

Azabu Case Study

Azabu by Kampai was one of 13 City-based businesses to successfully secure funding under the Business Improvement Grant round, approved by Council at the July 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting.

Azabu specialises in Wagyu Kappo & Yakiniku, a Japanese Cuisine which emphasises the meticulous preparation and presentation of dishes using high-quality premium A5 Wagyu. This is the international franchise’s first location in Australia, fittingly situated in the heart of our Northbridge entertainment precinct.

Chris Patton, Director of Azabu successfully secured a $25,000 Business Improvement Grant to go towards a full façade renovation. The building at 153 James St had previously lain vacant for six years. The supported works included a complete re-render and retexture of the façade, plaster repairs, painting, replacing the old broken glass bifold doors, refurbishing the tired veranda, and dressing the building with vibrant LED lighting and engaging signage.

Through the Business Improvement Grant program, the City is proud to support businesses undertaking works that enhance the public realm, create new experiences, and encourage people to visit and stay longer. The improvements to Azabu’s façade not only benefited the new Japanese restaurant, but also significantly improved the streetscape. The resulting additional lighting, increased foot traffic, and passive surveillance are changes that benefit both neighbouring businesses, as well as the wider community.
