Running annually from 27 May to 3 June, this year’s theme ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage’ invites all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements.

In the week leading up to National Reconciliation Week, the City of Perth Library will be screening a series of films from the Indigenous Community Stories Collection.

“These films celebrate and capture Aboriginal Elders’ stories from across Western Australia, reflecting on their lives and providing unique opportunity and insight,” City of Perth Deputy Chair Commissioner Gaye McMath said.

Featuring local Elders such as Alf Taylor, Biglai Hanlon, Laurel Nannup and Cedric Jacobs, each film depicts desert and town stories in different languages, exploring varied facets of Aboriginal history and culture.

The films will run each day from 12-2pm, 20 to 24 May. For more information, please visit the City of Perth website.

From 27 May to 3 June, excluding 29 May, the Trafalgar Bridge in East Perth will light up with the colours of the Aboriginal flag – red, yellow and black. The lights will enhance the iconic Trafalgar Bridge, which can be seen from as far away as Optus Stadium.

On 31 May, Reconciliation WA is also encouraging the Western Australian community to actively engage with, and celebrate, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories through a symbolic Walk for Reconciliation.

Taking place from 12.30pm, the walk will begin in front of the Wardang Gardens (next to RAC Arena) and conclude in Yagan Square.

“With various events occurring across Perth and Western Australia, National Reconciliation Week is celebrated by businesses, schools, early learning services, organisations and individuals Australia-wide,” Deputy Chair Commissioner Gaye McMath said.

“Supporting National Reconciliation Week aligns with the City of Perth’s Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, which focuses on building awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.”
