To recognise this, the City of Perth is organising a tree planting event at David Carr Memorial Park from 10am to 12pm on Sunday 28 July.
Following a traditional smoking ceremony from Neville Collard, trees, shrubs and groundcovers will be planted to improve the native coverage and flower display in the area.
Species selected are part of the Wildflower Capital Initiative led by Main Roads Western Australia.
The City of Perth planted 880 trees during the 18/19 financial year. This included more than 200 new street trees planted as part of the Urban Forest Plan’s infill street tree planting initiative.
Following National Tree Day, an additional 40 trees will be planted, as well as more than 1000 groundcover seedlings and shrubs.
“As cities become more built up and lifestyles are more sedentary, access to green space is becoming increasingly important in promoting community health and wellbeing,” Chair Commissioner Eric Lumsden said.
“The City of Perth’s urban forest is recognised as an important part of the city’s infrastructure and an asset in the creation of a liveable and climate-responsive city.”
Protecting our urban forest is of utmost importance due to the climate changes Perth is facing.
Trees within the urban forest help with a variety of aspects including food and shelter for wildlife, improving amenity, reducing heating and cooling costs, shading streets and public spaces, supporting community cohesion and creating a sense of place.
