Chair of Commissioners Eric Lumsden said as well as providing books and a wide range of historical and digital resources to the community, the City of Perth Library had become a well-established focal point in the community with a diverse calendar of events, workshops and speakers.

“For more than two years, the City of Perth Library has offered a peaceful, comfortable and modern place for visitors, city workers, students, tourists, researchers and children to connect, learn and be entertained,” Mr Lumsden said.

“Meeting the needs of the community through quality service is a key goal in our Strategic Community Plan and we are delighted to deliver on this goal by continuing to grow our range of resources and events for the community and reaching the milestone of one million visits to the City of Perth Library.

“City of Perth Library members have access to a wide range of resources including books, audiobooks, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, digital resources and access to films and documentaries, as well as being able to enjoy the café, indoor Tree of Knowledge and outdoor terrace overlooking the Swan River.”

The architecturally stunning civic building has created a true sense of place in the heart of the city over seven levels, with designated floors for children and teenagers, an indoor ficus tree, a History Centre, video conferencing facilities and premier meeting spaces for hire at affordable rates.

Designed by Kerry Hill Architects and built by Doric, the City of Perth Library has also won at least four architectural awards (including joint winner of the WA Architecture Awards’ George Temple Pool Award in April 2016) and received four design commendations, including an honourable mention in the 2016 Singapore Architects Awards.

Since opening in March 2016, the City of Perth Library has attracted 1 million visitors, 27,111 new members (55,066 members in total) at least 552,977 website hits and has issued 855,040 loans.

54,806 people have attended 584 events at the City of Perth Library.

These events have included children’s story time and rhyme time, book launches, author talks, community singing, workshops, seminars and even a wedding!

Along with function and event spaces, there are four meeting rooms available to hire in the centre of the city, set in the modern comfort of the Library and in the beautiful surroundings of Cathedral Square.

As well as housing the City of Perth Library, Cathedral Square is home to Point Zero, the marker from which all distances to Perth are measured.

The City of Perth Library’s resources include books, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, and digital resources such as eBooks, audiobooks, music, online courses and much more.

Before the City of Perth Library opened in March 2016, the City of Perth had provided a library service from various locations for 165 years.
