For the next 12 months, free parking will be available from Bennett to Hill Streets, with fee payable bays converted to no fee payable bays.
A free parking trial in Claisebrook has been in place since July and the third phase of the trial will commence in West Perth in early September.
“The feedback we are getting is that free parking on Hay Street will be welcomed by local businesses and the community as the organisation shifts its focus towards precinct specific parking options to support small business, economic activation and street vibrancy,” Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said.
Businesses on Hay Street have expressed their support for the trial.
“We are thrilled the free parking trial is to be extended to our stretch of Hay Street and hopefully this will encourage more people to stop either for takeaway or even to stay and have breakfast or lunch,” Bella Gina Café’s Jo Moorhouse said.
“We feel that it will have a big effect on trade once the word is out. Times are tough out there at the moment and all these little things can make a huge difference to small business owners.”
Caffe Italia’s Roberto Iazzi said he supported any steps aimed at bringing more people into the city.
“I believe a free parking trial may be beneficial in this regard,” he said.
The Hay Street, East Perth free parking trial will provide valuable feedback on the impact of parking in key neighbourhoods of the City of Perth.
