• May is Tree Month in the City of Perth
  • Month-long program features more than 20 free nature-based and sustainability focused community events
  • Community plantings at Wellington Square and JH Abrahams Reserve
  • Free lunchtime performance by West Australian Opera

Community planting, opera under the trees, yoga in nature and composting workshops are all taking place in the City of Perth this May, as part of our third annual Tree Month.

Tree Month launches with a community tree planting event at Wellington Square, the first of multiple planting days where the community can come together to grow our tree canopy, connect with nature and learn more about the environment.

City of Perth Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said that Tree Month has become a much-loved and anticipated event on the City’s annual calendar – and an opportunity to grow and enhance our tree canopy which plays a vital role in cooling and enhancing the liveability of our City.

“Our community came together last Tree Month to plant nearly 1,000 trees and shrubs and we’re calling on City residents, workers and visitors to join us again this May,” Deputy Lord Mayor Reynolds said.

“This year’s Tree Month is even bigger with community planting days at Wellington Square and JH Abrahams Reserve, as well as numerous workshops and activities that connect us with nature and focus on sustainable living practices.

“And we’ve partnered with the West Australian Opera, to host a free lunchtime performance on 9 May on the lawn outside Council House. We’re also offering free yoga classes, a nature drawing workshop and sound meditation, to name a few.”

The month will focus on revegetation of key areas and the growth of the City’s tree canopy, while creating opportunities to bring residents and community groups together to share awareness of the value of trees and work toward a more sustainable, greener future.

“We have an ambitious goal to increase urban greening and grow our tree canopy to 30 per cent by 2036. Tree Month is a big contributor to this goal and a chance for the community to join together to make Perth a more liveable and sustainable city for years to come,” Deputy Lord Mayor Reynolds said.

The City of Perth’s Urban Forest Plan (2016-2036) is a comprehensive strategic action plan aimed at protecting and enhancing our tree canopy.
