Activities for Young People

Introduction
As the capital city of Western Australia, Perth is a destination of choice for many young people. The City of Perth welcomes young people and provides a helping hand by linking them to opportunities. In turn, young people make a significant contribution to the community, culture and economy of the city.

Perth Youth Advisory Council
The Perth Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a volunteer group of young people. The YAC has the opportunity to voice their opinion on the direction the City takes to make Perth a vibrant place for young people. They meet regularly to discuss issues and opportunities for young people, plan events and social functions and generally work hard at being effective members of the city community.

Their goals are:

  • To build partnerships within the youth sector.
  • To maintain a current understanding of priorities for youth in the City of Perth.
  • To provide direct feedback from young people.
  • To include young people in the City of Perth community.

To join the YAC young people must:

  • Be between 15 and 25 years of age;
  • Be a resident or regular visitor (once a week) to the city for work, study or leisure;
  • Complete a membership form and submit it to the YAC coordinator (forms can be found on the website); and
  • Produce a police clearance if over 18 years of age;
  • Be available to meet once a month and commit more time as required during events..

Please visit the Perth YAC website for more information on membership, current projects and news

YMCA Mobile Youth Service
The City of Perth does not have any permanent youth facilities, however, we do fund the YMCA mobile youth service.

The service is run from a converted bus, providing recreation facilities such as basketball hoops, soccer, skateboarding, rope games, x-box, guitars and other musical instruments, crafts and hair and nails equipment.

The bus parks near between the Alexander Library and the Art Gallery at the Cultural Centre in Northbridge every Friday night, from 6pm to 10pm during school terms.

Qualified youth workers are present at the bus to assist any young people with difficult issues that may be affecting their lives, such as:

  • Family and / or relationship conflict
  • Accommodation needs
  • Self harm / suicide
  • Domestic violence
  • Substance abuse
  • Poor self esteem
  • Low motivation
  • Need for social contact
  • Employment assistance

The youth workers also assist young people to socialise with each other and talk to adults and people in authority, such as the police and railway transit guards.

Festivals
Perth is host to a range of festivals that offer an opportunity for young people to participate including:

Skateboarding in Perth
For many young people skateboarding is a primary mode of transport as well as a sport and for some it is a whole lifestyle. Please consider the following points when you choose to skate in the City.

  • Everybody has the right to feel safe.
  • You can take pride in the fact that the City of Perth is one of safest capital cities in the world.
  • To keep it that way, show respect for other people by being polite and listening when they have concerns about where you skate.
  • Pedestrians always have the right of way.
  • It is in your best interest to avoid accidents and potential fines by carrying your skateboard through heavy pedestrian areas.

The closest skate park is at HQ in Leederville, which is two train stops from Perth. Visit their website for more information.
