The City of Perth’s Australia Day Skyworks 2020 has wowed over 250,000 people and supported the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery fund thanks to community fundraising efforts throughout the event today.
 
City of Perth General Manager Community Development Anne Banks-McAllister said Skyworks 2020 had been a great success and the final funds raised would grow as total donations from the event continue to be counted over the coming days.
 
“The City of Perth kicked off the fundraising efforts with $50,000 and we'll add this to the donations collected by a coordinated team of 50 volunteers at Skyworks today, to help communities affected by bushfires around Australia,” Ms Banks-McAllister said.
 
Ms Banks-McAllister said the City’s online fundraising page would also remain open until 31 January to give anyone who missed the opportunity to donate at Skyworks the chance to contribute before the end of the month.
 
“I am delighted by the outpouring of generosity from our community at Skyworks this year. Australia Day is a time to come together and show our support for each other and that’s exactly what the people of Perth came out and did today. I’d like to thank everybody who attended the event, donated and helped make this year’s Australia Day Skyworks a great success,” Ms Banks-McAllister said.
 
At its peak, the annual celebration saw in excess of an estimated 250,000 people flock to the foreshore in perfect weather across Langley Park and Supreme Court Gardens, South Perth, Victoria Park and Kings Park to enjoy the air show and free entertainment from 3pm before the spectacular fireworks finale at 8pm.
 
The Lotterywest Entertainment Zone at Langley Park provided hours of amusement for families throughout the afternoon while the Birak Concert saw people join in cultural celebrations in Supreme Court Gardens.
 
The highlight of the night was a 30-minute fireworks display which captivated the crowd with stunning pyrotechnics including a brand-new effect creating waves of comets and mines in the sky over the Swan River.  

The late Bon Scott took centre stage with six AC/DC songs including TNT and Thunderstruck.
 
“The City of Perth Australia Day Skyworks would not be possible without the support of our partners Lotterywest, mix94.5 and Channel 9,” Ms Banks-McAllister said.
 
“I encourage families to enjoy the rest of the long weekend with their loved ones and make the most of the fantastic experiences and entertainment on offer in the city including Fringe World and the City of Perth Festival of Sail at Elizabeth Quay.”
