Work & family balance

The City of Perth offers flexible working arrangements under its EBA to cater for a diverse range of needs. I have accessed parental leave, as I have 2 small children, to ensure a work lifestyle family balance is achieved. I stay at home 2 days a week as the principal care giver and look after our little ones. This ensures my partner and I share in the joy of their upbringing whilst maintaining a career.

A foot in the door

Doing a traineeship in Town Planning at the City of Perth is an excellent opportunity to get my foot in the door for my future career. The City offers great flexibility between study/work and the experience gained in my field is second to none. The opportunities to work with big scale projects and the buzz of working in the CBD were big draw cards for me to work at the City of Perth.

Paid to study

I have found the City of Perth study assistance program to be of great benefit to employees. As a current P/T student myself, I have been able to access 5 hours study leave per week, which is very handy when you work full time. Also, as the City subsidises my study fees I am getting a qualification minus the HECS debt. My unit has been very supportive of my studies and allowing me the time off to complete assignments. It’s fantastic to be apply to what I am learning at uni in the workplace.

Not a job but a career path

Whilst I was initially employed by the City of Perth as a Horticulturalist, I now work as an Administrative Services Officer in the Corporate Support Unit. The transition from working as a ‘blue collar’ worker to a ‘white collar’ worker was a career decision that was supported by the organisation. The City of Perth has helped to develop my career path by providing me with opportunities to become involved in various projects outside of my normal working activities. This has allowed me to have a fantastic work lifestyle and has assisted me to realise my career goals and ambitions.

Great flexibility

I joined the City of Perth staff about four years ago towards the end of my working life because there was an interesting job on offer. At the end of last year I decided to cease full-time work and commence a graduated retirement. The City was very accommodating in agreeing to the two day a week proposal I put forward and for me to work on the days that accommodated my other personal arrangements. I find I still have some flexibility to vary my work days by agreement and my graduated retirement is working out to plan. I can wholeheartedly recommend the City of Perth as an enjoyable place to work.

Work and travel

Working at the City has given me the opportunity to broaden my experience and my horizons. As I am involved in the self-funded leave program, a small portion of my wage is salary sacrificed so that I am able to take additional leave throughout the year. My next trip is a 3 month vacation overseas exploring Europe and North Africa. It is rewarding to know that I can combine my work, university study and travel interests in a supportive environment.

Healthy lifestyle

After graduating from uni I was offered a temporary contract with the City of Perth as an Environment Officer. That was 5 years ago now, and since then my role has been made permanent and evolved considerably. One of the best things about working for the City of Perth is the opportunity of working flexible hours. As someone who enjoys keeping fit and healthy, I am able to take longer lunch breaks to train and make up the extra hours in the afternoon. I have also been able to take advantage of the City’s subsidies for fitness membership which helps to support my active lifestyle.
