Why the City of Perth?
Location was a big draw card for me to come and work at the City of Perth. I get to enjoy spectacular views of the Swan River every day and public transport really takes the hassle out of getting to work. The range of employee benefits has also been a huge plus. In particular the high superannuation contributions, generous healthy lifestyle subsidies and a great social club have all been of great benefit. Professionally speaking, it is also important to me that the City is an accredited organisation for the Institute of Chatered Accountants’ Graduate Program. The accreditation has allowed me to become a recognised mentor to other accountants.
What does your role involve?
As the City’s Senior Management Accountant I am in charge of the Budgeting, Rates, Accounts Receivable and Cashiering section in the Finance department. The role is vast and varied and involves reporting to the Executive, preparing financial models, delegating and over-seeing work, training & recruitment of finance staff, liaising with other Government agencies and stakeholders, participating in compliance issues and adhering to tax legislation. I also have the responsibility of supervising a team of 29 employees.
Career highlights?
Since I joined the City in 2004 there have been many career highpoints. Graduating from the Institute of Chartered Accountants Program in 2006 was a particular thrill, as was the promotion to Senior Management Accountant in 2007. Overall though, the opportunity to work with other experienced professionals in my field within a friendly and supportive environment has been the best reward.
Advice for job seekers
My tip would be to apply to organisations that have good career development programs in place and are committed to “growing their own staff”. It’s also important to consider the people that you will be working with and making sure that you can learn as much from their experiences as possible.
