Why the City of Perth?
I moved here from overseas and couldn’t think of anything better than working for the council of the city I had chosen to live in.
What does your role involve?
My role requires me to be a member of a number of different taskforces, so I’m exposed to a variety of disciplines within the City. My day usually consists of arranging and attending meetings, preparing agendas and minutes, arranging presentations, processing paperwork, and other general administrative duties. I also volunteer to assist with the Civic receptions and other official events.
Career highlights?
Working on high profile events such as Citizenship Ceremonies and Civic Receptions for International Ambassadors. Undertaking projects such as reviewing and updating corporate indicators, maintaining the Business Excellence framework through bi monthly newsletters and implementing process improvements initiated from staff and units.
Advice for job seekers
Don’t be intimidated if you have not previously worked for a council or within the government before. Each new role comes hand in hand with new tasks and an environment to become familiar with. When you start at the City, you are allocated a buddy who will go through an induction process with you and show you the ropes.
The City offers great incentives like flexi time, paid parental leave and other benefits that support a diverse workforce. Plus, I get to cycle along the river to work every day and utilise the great bike locker and change room facilities offered at the City – what a bonus!
