Name: Michaela Trlin
Role: Planning Officer
Started: June 2007

Why the City of Perth?

My motivation for wanting to work for the City of Perth was that I was interested in what was going on in the city I live in and in having an input into its future development. The City of Perth provides the opportunity to get involved in large scale commercial and residential developments unlike most other local governments.

What does your role involve?

As a statutory planner I am involved in the assessment of a variety of commercial, residential and mixed – use developments within the City. My typical day involves assessing development applications against the City Planning Scheme and Council Policies, liaising with other City staff and providing professional advice relating to development within the City to internal staff, ratepayers, architects and developers.

Career highlights?

During my employment with the City I have enjoyed learning more about building design and appearance and how planners help to create better streetscapes and places for the wider community.

Advice for job seekers

There are plenty of great opportunities for planners in the current market. A number of universities in Western Australia and Tafe are offering planning courses. Due to the shortage of planners in WA at the moment, many local authorities and consultancies are employing planning students to fill vacancies. This presents a good opportunity to study whilst gaining experience in the field and earning money at the same time.
