Why the City of Perth?
The City of Perth presents over 14 major events, facilitates over 300 external events and sponsors over 50 major events each year. Having the opportunity to work on such a fantastic, varied and exciting events program is what attracted me to the City initially. I have remained working at the City for 7 years, not only because I absolutely love what I do, but I have also had the opportunity for career advancement, with two promotions since I started. Plus, the working conditions are excellent and the people are great!
What does your role involve?
I am the Events Officer for the City of Perth and my main role is to project manage the City’s major events. This includes such events as the school holiday programs, Northbridge Festival, Christmas Events, New Years Eve and Skyworks. My main tasks include project management of infrastructure and performances, logistical coordination, creative development, stakeholder liaison, coordinate and manage production schedules and on-site implementation.
Career highlights?
I am very proud of my involvement with the event coordination and implementation of WA’s largest community event, Lotterywest Australia Day Skyworks. I have been directly involved with many components of the event including the youth event at Langley Park, Corporate Box entertainment, Recycling Initiatives and the coordination of 80 infrastructure points. It is a huge effort to implement an event that attracts 300,000 people and working with over 150 stakeholders has been an amazing experience.
Through the various roles I have had at the City of Perth I have also been very lucky to meet a variety of celebrities, from sporting, political and performance backgrounds. Being a huge Eagles supporter an event highlight was coordinating the 2006 Grand Final Parade and meeting the boys!
Advice for job seekers
The one thing that I would recommend to anyone wanting a career in Events is to get involved in any way you can – through work experience, volunteer work and administration. Hands on experience is invaluable.
