Arts Officer

Michelle McDonald

Name: Michele McDonald
Role: Arts Officer
Started: May 2005

Why the City of Perth?

I was attracted to the position because it offered flexibility between work and my other commitments. It is rare to find a permanent part time position in an organisation that values the importance of a ‘balanced’ approach to life. As a mother of two, this benefit certainly attracted me to the position.

I was also attracted to working in the city, as it allowed me to take public transport from where I live and to be in the city within 15 minutes. This has reduced my travel time and previous costs incurred with petrol and car maintenance.

What does your role involve?

My key responsibility is to administer the City’s Cultural Sponsorship Program within the Community Services Unit. This Program promotes lively and innovative arts and cultural activities to excite and engage City visitors, residents and workers.

I am responsible for managing the assessment of applications for funding, reports to Council, assisting successful applicants with the delivery of agreed City benefits and all internal administration of budgets, acquittals, promotional clearance etc.

Career highlights?

I have been in this position for three years and it has been satisfying to see the Cultural Sponsorship Program budget substantially increase in that time. This has enabled the Program to nurture and support culture in the city, thereby enhancing quality of life for our community; contributing to the economy, increasing vibrancy and positioning the City of Perth as a key contributor to the life of our city.

Advice for job seekers

A qualification or substantial varied experience in the Arts certainly assists to provide a knowledge base for this position. This is a varied role that covers the areas of theatre, visual arts, music, dance, large to small scale free outdoor events, installations, exhibitions, film and various cultural events. Experience in these areas assists not only in the assessment of proposed activities but enables awareness of the production logistics faced by the organizers of these events.

The other key areas are exceptional communication, written and people skills. This position needs to maintain high levels of report writing to Council, liaison with arts and cultural organisations at all levels and maintain substantial administrative procedures.

A passion for what you do and a willingness to be a flexible team member also helps!
